Artist Statement

Recent studies have shown that our dependence on external memory devices changes the way the brain forms and recalls memories. Motivated by the passing of some important figures in my life, I have investigated how these devices can be conceived of as contemporary Memento Mori. I found that the incidental, voicemail messages stored on mobile phones, while trivial and often frivolous, discarded when people are alive, has a potential to become so significant and evoke so much. By listening to the messages stored on various phones, I have been able to discover little conversations that never actually took place.
