Our Endless Horizon (detail), 2011, watercolour
‘So death, the most terrifying of ills, is nothing to us, since so long as we exist, death is not with us; but when death comes, then we do not exist. It does not concern either the living or the dead, since for the former it is not, and the latter are no more’ Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus As a state that excludes life, and is yet to come, death’s meaning is haunting and always unclear. In this sense death poses a similar dilemma to that of the horizon. Both are anticipated, yet neither is lived through. Like the painted surface, the horizon and the human comprehension of death are both illusory spaces. This theme is explored through a series of small watercolours which together form an ‘interrupted’ panorama.
