Artist Statement

My formative and profoundly influential initiation to creativity was through the humble matriarchal traditions handed down to me as a girl- dressmaking, furnishing, cooking, dressing and applying make-up. These rites of passage and art making itself are both meaningful acts of love necessitating thoughtful analysis, ingenuity, resourcefulness and the imparting of knowledge. This explains the love-affair in my work with craft, Pattern and Decoration, domesticity and the evocative quality and neglected beauty of second-hand kitsch. Reinterpreting traditions and nostalgic childhood recollection enables me to examine and assert my own identity and development as a woman in a more fulfilling way.
